Breath, Space, Awareness: Updating the Pilates Principles
This two-hour workshop explores the intrinsic and integral connection between functional breathing, alignment, and Pilates “core work.” By demystifying the true meaning of “the core” and how deeply it is supported by breath, we can achieve a deeper and healthier core connection within both classical and contemporary Pilates movement. By shifting perspective, your Pilates practice is reinvigorated — more exciting, more challenging — and can naturally encourage a release of excess tension, increased pelvic floor health, easeful postural improvements, and more.
Shirah Perry is a Pilates, yoga, dance, and functional movement teacher, as well as a dancer and choreographer. Based in Berlin, Germany since 2016, where she is an advocate for the growth of contemporary teaching methods, Shirah makes guest contributions to workshops and events in diverse settings — from chiropractic studios to cycling retreats. Her guest teaching has taken her as far as Spain, Kenya, and Zanzibar, and she regularly returns to teach in the U.S., especially New York City, her former home. Shirah was inspired to teach biomechanically informed movement after contemporary Pilates helped her fully recover from a debilitating back injury that nearly sidelined her dance career. Drawing from her background in dance and many somatic influences, she offers technical, anatomically sound physical practice that counters deeply ingrained patterns of tension and cultivates proprioceptive skills.
Shirah holds a BFA with a concentration in Ballet Pedagogy, a 600 hour comprehensive Pilates
certification, and is a 200 hour registered yoga teacher (RYT).
